家居综合布线是独门独户，且每户都有许多的房间，因此布线系统必须以分户管理为特征。一 般来说，家居布线中每户的每一个房间的配线都应该是独立的，使住户可以方便地自行管理住宅。另外，智能小区需要传输的信号种类较多，不仅有语音和数据，还有有线电视、电话、网络、影音等。因此，家居布线每个房间的信号较多，需要的接口类型也较为丰富。由于家居布线的这些特点，因此我们在家居布线时应该要选用专门的家居布线的产品。
布线是一种模块化的、灵活性及高的建筑物内或建筑群之间的信息传输通道。它既能使语音、数据、图像设备和交换设备与其他信息管理系统彼此相连，也能使这些设备与外部相连接。综合布线还包括建筑物外部网络或电信线路连接点与应用系统设备之间的所有线缆及相关的连接部件。综合布线由不同系列和规格的部件组成，其中包括：传输介质、相关连接硬件（如配线架、连接器、插座、插头、适配器） 及电气保护设备等。这些部件可用来构建各种子系统，它们都有各自的具体用途，不仅易于实施，而且能随需求变化而平稳升级。
